Blood pressure breakthrough: Jab every six months could control condition for millions

A SIMPLE jab to lower blood pressure for six months at a time has been developed, say scientists.

Hypertension affects three in 10 Britons!

The breakthrough could eventually end the chore for millions of swallowing a cocktail of drugs and be a boon for those who forget to take their daily medication.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, often known as the “silent killer”, affects three in 10 Britons. If left unchecked it increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

A combination of drugs is usually needed to bring blood pressure down effectively. But there is now hope of a “vaccination” self-administered every six months.

Tests on rodents targeted angiotensin II – a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict, forcing the heart to work harder.

The vaccine slashed blood pressure for up to six months while reducing damage to the heart and blood vessels.

Crucially, there were no signs of damage to other organs such as the kidney or liver.

Sarah Hills, 33, feared she could drop dead at any moment.
She went from a dress size of 28 to a size 12 and now weighs 11st 10lb.

She and husband Gareth, 52, bought a house in 2007 and were advised to take out life insurance as protection on their home - but were refused.
Sarah, from Bristol, said: "I was stunned. It was like being told I was going to drop dead.
"I was always fat, simple as that. I was morbidly obese as a child and it only got worse in adulthood.
"I was obviously aware of it, but up until I was turned down for life insurance, I'd been able to kid myself that I lived quite healthily."
She was finally stirred into action after having daughters Megan in
2009 and Rosie in 2011.

She said: "After having the girls, suddenly I had a reason to be fit and strong.
And I wanted to live a long time, for their sakes - I didn't want to worry that I might be diagnosed with some fatal illness because of my weight.
"By my 30th birthday in May 2012, I was horribly unhappy and turning 30 was a bit of a wake-up call.
That summer we went to Butlins and when I couldn't fit on any of the rides, it really was the last straw."

When she joined WeightWatchers in October 2012, she weighed 23st 11lb.
She said: "I was petrified of going, but at first I just wanted to get under 20st. I always concentrated on my next little goal, half a stone at a time.
I got more confident as time went on and the following May, I joined the gym weighing 18st.
"I was still self-conscious, knowing I was the fattest person in the room, but I could already tell I was so much slimmer.
"Now I was using the cross trainer and doing a spin class, when before I couldn't have even run for a bus."
Last October, after hitting her target weight of 11st 10lb, Sarah gave up her job as a civil servant and became a Weight Watchers consultant.
She said: "I decided I wanted to help other women.
I just want people to be aware that although it's scary, it is possible and you can do it. You will be amazed at what you can achieve."

Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing and care for older people, has installed the stations as part of an initiative that will eventually see them provided in all its care homes.
The Anchor home was officially opened last month by TV presenter and antiques expert John Bly.
He said: “Many congratulations to all involved in getting Buckingham Lodge care home ready for its first residents. The combination of thoughtful design and passionate people make it a real landmark development.
“Having had close personal experience with those who have lived with dementia, I understand the importance of providing safe, well-designed spaces which offer the highest standard of care.

“Buckingham Lodge is a remarkable, iconic concept built from simple but brilliant ideas, which should be the pace-setter for care homes in the future.”
The snacking stations will be stocked with a variety of food and soft drinks to allow residents to graze all day, ensuring that everyone in the care home is hydrated and well fed at all times.
Wendy Luck, home manager at Buckingham Lodge, said: “Although we specialise in dementia care, the nutrition and hydrationstations are for all our residents and will have a real positive impact on their day-to-day lives.
“Loss of weight is a real issue for older people nationwide, whether they are living in a care home or in their own homes.
“These new stations will encourage Buckingham Lodge residents to remain hydrated, especially on hot days.
“They’re also particularly beneficial for people living with dementia, many of whom like to wander. The stations provide easy access to food and drink so that residents can maintain their independence and receive the nutrients they need.”
Before introducing the nutrition and hydration stations, each care home will undertake risk assessments to ensure that any residents who have difficulty eating or have special dietary requirements remain properly protected and cared for.
Buckingham Lodge became the first Anchor care home to feature the nutrition and hydration stations when it opened on April 27. The stations will now be standard for all Anchor’s new care homes.
Richard Herne, Anchor’s national catering manager, said: “This is a fantastic development, which reflects Anchor’s ethos of giving residents as much control as possible over their day-to-day decisions. “Buckingham Lodge residents will be free to choose from a mixture of high-calorie snacks and nibbles, as well as juices and other cold soft drinks to help keep them hydrated and provide them with vital vitamins and minerals.
“We also demonstrated the stations to other Anchor care homes at the Home Managers Care Conference in Peterborough on April 28, which was a great chance for colleagues to see the benefits for themselves.
“I hope everyone will share in my enthusiasm now and help us take the initiative nationwide.”
Buckingham Lodge will provide care for older people, as well as specialist dementia care.
Meticulously finished to a very high standard, the care home offers en-suite rooms for up to 64 residents in a light, spacious and elegant setting. The home provides 24-hour care and support in a warm and considerate environment.
High quality, nourishing cuisine will be served in the dining rooms and there will be a cafĂ©, lounges, a hair salon as well as landscaped gardens.
With more than 45 years of experience, Anchor prides itself on giving older people a choice of great places to live. Anchor has more than 1,000 properties across England.
They range from rented and leasehold retirement properties, to residential care homes, specialist dementia care homes and retirement villages.
