Diabetes breakthrough: Nutrient rich snack bar cuts risks in weeks

A SNACK bar full of vital nutrients could cut the risk of diabetes in just eight weeks, scientists say.

In tests the fibre-rich supplement was shown to aid weight loss and increase “good” cholesterol.
Studies show the fruit-based CHORI-bars contain everything those at risk of developing the debilitating condition require to maintain the best of health, with no need to make  drastic dietary changes.
They are low-calorie, nutrient-rich snacks crammed full of essential vitamins, minerals, fibre and omega-3 fatty acids.
Researchers claim they provide a cheap and easy way to enhance weight loss while lowering the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
While the exact causes of diabetes are still not fully understood, it is known that being overweight plays a significant role.
Obesity is believed to account for 80 to 85 per cent of the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, while recent research suggests that obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop it than those with a body mass index of less than 22.
In clinical trials, patients eating two CHORI-bars a day for two months improved insulin sensitivity, antioxidant defences, and dyslipidemia – an abnormal amount of blood fats.
It also caused reductions in weight and waist circumference because each bar contains 110 calories.
The bar was developed in America over a decade.
Dr Bruce Ames, who named the bar after the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) where tests were conducted, said: “Over-consumption of Western diets high in calories, sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, but low in micronutrients is a major cause of the increasing prevalence of obesity.
“Because poor diets are the root cause of these health problems, an obvious approach to the obesity epidemic would be to improve dietary habits.
