Mediterranean food can boost brain health and help lasting memory
A Mediterranean diet is not only good for the body it also gives the brain a boost, scientists say.
It is the clearest sign yet that consuming greens, nuts, fish and olive oil - while allowing for modest amounts of red meat and alcohol - can future-proof the brain against dementia.
The world’s most comprehensive study into how food affects brain function in the middle-aged and elderly found an association between diet quality and cognitive decline.
Nephrology specialist Andrew Smyth, who carried out the research, said: “Adoption of a healthy diet probably begins early in life and (it) might also go along with adoption of other healthy behaviours.
“We found higher diet quality is associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline (and) improved diet quality represents an important potential target for reducing the global burden of cognitive decline.”
His five-year study involved almost 30,000 people from 40 countries. All were aged 55 or older with diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease.
Their thinking and memory skills were tested at the start of the study, after two and five years.
It showed those with the healthiest diets were 24 per cent less likely to have cognitive decline than people with the most unhealthy.
Everyone was asked how often they ate foods like fruit and vegetables, nuts and soy proteins, whole grains, fast food and the ratio of fish to meat and eggs in their diet.
